What Mastercard is, and where it differs
Mastercard began in 1966 as the Interbank Card Association, a group of banks formed to compete with BankAmericard, and traded as Master Charge before taking its current name in 1979. Like Visa, it is a network rather than a lender: it routes an authorisation to your issuing bank, and your bank decides whether a gambling transaction is allowed.
The same merchant category code applies, MCC 7995, and the same regional rules bite. UK credit card gambling has been prohibited since April 2020. Many issuers elsewhere decline gambling merchants by policy or treat the deposit as a cash advance, which starts interest immediately and adds a fee.
The practical difference from Visa sits on the way out. Mastercard's payout rails, historically Moneysend, are less widely deployed at casinos than Visa Direct, which is why operators that pay winnings straight back to a card more often support Visa.
