Here is the thing almost nobody gets right about Ethereum Classic: it is not a copy of Ethereum. It is the original chain, unbroken since 2015. Ethereum is the fork. The DAO hack, and the split it caused
In 2016 an experiment called The DAO raised around $150 million of ether in a matter of weeks. In June that year an attacker exploited a flaw in its code and drained roughly a third of it. Nothing was broken about Ethereum itself. The contract did exactly what it was written to do.
The community faced a question with no comfortable answer. Rewrite the ledger to undo the theft and admit that "immutable" has an asterisk, or let the money go and watch the ecosystem's credibility burn with it. In July 2016 the majority voted to fork, and the chain most people call Ethereum today is the one where the hack was reversed.
A minority refused. Their position was that a ledger which can be edited when the loss is large enough is not a ledger, it is a database with extra steps. They kept mining the original chain, and it became Ethereum Classic. Whatever you make of the argument, it was a principled one.
ETC still runs proof-of-work mining, which Ethereum abandoned in 2022. It also added something Ethereum never has: a hard supply cap of around 210.7 million ETC, tightening emissions every five million blocks.
Why your deposit takes longer here
ETC's honesty problem is its security budget. A chain with a fraction of Ethereum's mining power is cheaper to attack, and it has been. In January 2019 and repeatedly through August 2020 attackers rented enough hash power to reorganise thousands of blocks and double-spend, hitting exchanges for real money.
Casinos responded the only way they could, demanding far more confirmations before crediting an ETC deposit than for almost any other coin. That is not an operator being difficult. It is the direct, practical consequence of the 51% attack history, and it is why an ETC deposit can take considerably longer than the block time suggests.
