What SUI is, and why Facebook is in this story
Meta spent years and enormous political capital trying to launch a currency, first as Libra, then as Diem. It was killed by regulators in 2022 without ever shipping. The engineers who built its technology walked out, founded Mysten Labs, and launched Sui in May 2023 with the parts worth keeping.
Chief among those parts is Move, a programming language written for Diem specifically to make it hard to accidentally lose or duplicate assets, which is the failure mode behind most smart contract disasters.
Sui's other departure is how it stores data. Most chains keep a global list of account balances, so every transaction has to queue behind every other one. Sui treats everything as an independent object, so two unrelated transactions have no reason to wait for each other and can execute at the same time. Combined with its Mysticeti consensus, that produces finality in a few hundred milliseconds.
Two features matter directly to players. Sponsored transactions let an application pay gas on your behalf, so a casino can absorb the fee and you never hold SUI just to move SUI. And zkLogin lets you create a wallet with a Google or Apple login rather than a seed phrase, which removes the single biggest reason people bounce off crypto.
