What TON is, and the project regulators killed once already
Pavel and Nikolai Durov, the brothers behind Telegram, started building the Telegram Open Network in 2018 and raised $1.7 billion from private investors to do it. In October 2019 the SEC sued, arguing the tokens were unregistered securities. Telegram fought, lost, abandoned the project in May 2020, returned most of the money and paid an $18.5 million penalty.
The code was open source, so a group of independent developers picked it up, renamed it The Open Network, and kept building without Telegram's involvement. In 2022 Telegram reversed course and named TON its blockchain of choice, integrating a wallet directly into the app. A project a regulator had destroyed came back through the front door.
Technically TON is unusual. It shards aggressively, splitting into more chains as load rises rather than queuing, with blocks around five seconds and fees of a fraction of a cent. Its token standard is called Jettons, and USDT launched natively on TON in April 2024, which matters more for gambling than any other detail here.
